CPI Director Jane Wilkinson will participate at Chatham House’s Climate Change 2016 event in the “Carbon Sinks” panel from 16:20-17:40.

Language in the Paris Agreement has renewed the emphasis on carbon sinks, raising important questions about land use and new technologies. This session will explore the opportunities and risks presented by different carbon sequestration strategies. Questions discussed will include:

  • What roles can natural sinks and negative emissions technologies play in limiting warming to ‘well below’ 2 degrees or 1.5 degrees?
  • What is needed to transform land-use sectors from sources of emissions to sinks?
  • What are the implications for land governance, development and finance in developing countries? Where are the trade-offs likely to occur?
  • How feasible is the widespread deployment of negative emissions technologies such as bioenergy with carbon, capture and storage (BECCS), and what are the risks?
