Joaquim Levy, currently part of the management team of Banco Safra in São Paulo, has served in leadership roles across the public and private sector in Brazil and abroad.

Mr. Levy served as Brazil’s Finance Minister, the Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank, and President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). In each of these positions, he promoted efforts towards financial and climate sustainability, supporting greater involvement of financial institutions and the private sector in initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect tropical forests around the globe, and especially in the Amazon.

Before joining Banco Safra, Mr. Levy’s private sector experience included serving as CEO of BRAM, the asset management arm of Banco Bradesco, Brazil’s second-largest private bank group, where he fostered the alignment of the business with PRI and other mechanisms to mainstream environment considerations into asset management practices.

Mr. Levy also served as the Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration at the Inter-American Development Bank, the Secretary of Brazil’s National Treasury, the Secretary of Finance of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and has held several positions at the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He recently participated in the High-level Expert Group appointed by the UN Secretary General to provide guidelines regarding net zero pledges and commitments from non‑state actors.

Mr. Levy holds a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago, a master’s in economics from Getúlio Vargas Foundation, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
