Climate Policy Initiative organized three side events and presented at a further three official side events at the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Here follow summaries of those events.

Assessing knowledge gaps on future climate policy implications from an overview across mitigation and adaptation initiatives

The aim is to identify knowledge gaps on the implications for EU stakeholders of possible directions of climate policy during the Kyoto protocol and the Durban Platform. Through synthesizing the knowledge on climate policy directions it will support policymakers’ decisions by reducing uncertainties.

Delivering Low-Carbon Development Results through Innovative Financial Mechanisms

Effective climate finance is the result of a good mix of public policy, working instruments, and appropriate incentives to unlock adequate financing. Indonesia has deployed a number of initiatives to support programs and projects of climate change mitigation and adaptation by setting national targets and action plans, mobilizing public and private financing from domestic and international sources, providing incentives, and creating financing instruments to cater different needs. The side event featured presentations of the following financing mechanism initiatives: Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund, Green Prosperity, revolving funds for geothermal and energy efficiency, public-private schemes for low carbon investment, green banking program, REDD+ financing tracking. Susbequent discussions focussed on the challenges and opportunities in enhancing effectiveness of the selected instruments.

Consultation on Development and Climate Change
11:30 – 15:00, November 19, 2013, Polonia Palace Hotel, Warsaw
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and Climate Policy Initiative co-organized an informal wokshop on effective development co-operation and climate policy. This consultation addressed two themes, namely improving transparency in tracking climate finance flows, and strengthening development co-operation for adaptation. Climate Finance Dinner Series: ‘Climate Finance Effectiveness’
19:30-21:30, Tuesday, November 19, 2013, Sheraton Hotel
World Resources Institute, Climate Policy Initiative, and Overseas Development Institute co-organized a dinner event bringing together high-level representatives from government, private and public financial institutions, academia, and the policy analysis world to discuss challenges and opportunities in scaling up climate finance.

The Key to Scaling-up Energy Efficiency Investments
08:15—09:45, November 20, 2013, Climate Action/UNEP Sustainable Innovation Forum
This workshop highlighted the various barriers to energy efficiency investments and discussed a wide range of issues that policymakers should bear in mind when developing policy and designing market frameworks and instruments to promote investments in energy efficiency.

Participating companies and organizations included Danfoss, Great Eastern Energy Corporation, Siemens and 3M, as well as Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and World Energy Council (WEC).

Growth with Protection: What’s next in Brazilian Climate Policy?
13:15—14:45, November 20, 2013, Side Event Room Cracow
Brazil has reduced emissions significantly by combating deforestation. Next, it plans to focus on policies that combine economic growth, social inclusion and ecosystem protection. The Ministry of Environment will share its approach at an event co-hosted with Climate Policy Initiative. A more detailed agenda can be found here.
