{"id":3031,"date":"2013-11-19T23:52:23","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T07:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/climatepolicyinitiative.org\/?post_type=cpi_pr&#038;p=3031"},"modified":"2014-07-15T23:04:00","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T23:04:00","slug":"data-visualizations-on-global-climate-change-investment-show-were-falling-short-of-the-need","status":"publish","type":"cpi_pr","link":"https:\/\/www.climatepolicyinitiative.org\/pt-br\/press-release\/data-visualizations-on-global-climate-change-investment-show-were-falling-short-of-the-need\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Visualizations on Global Climate Change Investment Show We\u2019re Falling Short of the Need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Warsaw, Poland\u2014A new series of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatefinancelandscape.org\/\">data visualizations<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/climatepolicyinitiative.org\">Climate Policy Initiative (CPI)<\/a> illustrate climate investment around the world, a topic countries are currently debating at the 19<sup>th<\/sup> United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties, which is convening in Warsaw, Poland through November 22. \u00a0The visualizations are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.FinanceLandscape.org\">www.FinanceLandscape.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings from the data visualizations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Climate investment plateaued at USD $359 billion in 2012, far short of the need.<\/b> The International Energy Agency projects that an additional investment of $5 trillion (above business as usual) is required between now and 2020 for clean energy alone, to limit warming to two degrees Celsius.<\/li>\n<li><b>Seventy-six percent of climate finance originated in the country in which it was used. <\/b>Further, much of the international money flowing between developed countries is private, while the vast majority of money flowing from developed to developing countries is public. This highlights investors&#8217; preference for familiar environments perceived to be lower risk.<\/li>\n<li><b>Public sources provided $135 billion, or 38% of total finance. <\/b>Public sources played a critical role in enabling private finance through incentives, low-cost loans, risk coverage mechanisms, direct project investment, and technical support. Private sources contributed $224 billion.<\/li>\n<li><b>These public measures for climate change are significant, but remain dwarfed by government support for fossil fuel consumption. <\/b>The OECD estimates government support to fossil fuel energy consumption and production, estimated at $523 billion each year for developing and emerging economies alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Climate Finance Landscape visualization project is based on the most comprehensive inventory of climate investment available, <a href=\"https:\/\/climatepolicyinitiative.org\/publication\/global-landscape-of-climate-finance-2013\/\"><i>The Global Landscape of Climate Finance 2013<\/i><\/a>, a CPI report released in October, 2013.
