This Update brings together key findings on from the 2014 Adaptation Gap Report with preliminary findings from ongoing work focussed on adaptation finance gaps. The update also draws on insights from the adaptation component of the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) submitted by countries and synthesised by the UNFCCC secretariat. As of 13 November, 134 INDCs, covering 161 countries, had been submitted. More than 80 per cent of these include components on adaptation, forming a new basis for discussing and agreeing on ways forward to enhance global, national and local action on climate change adaptation and address adaptation gaps.<br \/>\nThe presentations of the update and key findings from the INDCs will be followed by a panel discussion on national and international priorities, and ways forward to effectively and efficiently addressing adaptation under a new global agreement on climate change. Research shows, however, that the private sector \u2013 which provides the lion\u2019s share of current investment in climate action \u2013 faces specific barriers to scaling up finance in developing countries. The Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance (The Lab) is a public-private partnership that identifies, develops, and launches innovative climate finance instruments. Less than two years in, The Lab has made significant progress. Four pilot instruments designed to address specific barriers in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and adaptation have attracted nearly USD 200 million in initial, public funding and are poised to mobilize billions of additional private finance, generating real change on the ground in key climate change sectors.<\/p>\n<p>This COP 21 side event will bring together representatives of The Lab, donor governments, and the pilot instruments. The financing gap could be at least partially filled by institutional investors that seek uncorrelated and higher yielding investment alternatives while playing their part to address climate change. This side event presents some recent examples and new ideas allowing institutional investors to engage on climate finance. It will discuss existing products, such as green bonds, and other examples and ideas for innovative financing structures that use public funds to mobilise more private capital.
