Vijay Nirmal Gavarraju is CPI India’s Associate Director based in New Delhi, where he oversees the work of a team of analysts, while also supporting cross-cutting strategic projects for the India program. With a strong background in finance, Vijay is an investment expert specializing in climate and renewable energy. Vijay is also the Project Manager for US-India Clean Energy Finance (USICEF). USICEF is India’s first project preparation facility to scale up distributed renewable energy businesses and drive long-term debt financing from OPIC and other international financial institutions.

Vijay joined CPI in 2017, bringing extensive experience in project finance, risk mitigation mechanisms, credit appraisal, term-sheet negotiations, financial modeling, innovative financial instruments, and program management. At CPI, Vijay has played a critical role in the success of the USICEF program and the India Catalytic Solar Finance program. He has also played a large role in establishing the financial sector program for distributed solar in India.

Prior to CPI, Vijay worked with Bank Muscat, IL&FS Financial Services Ltd, and Reliance Infrastructure Ltd as a project and structured finance expert. In these organizations, he led and structured debt syndication for several large-scale infrastructure and power projects, and has an overall transaction experience of ~USD 2.5 billion. He has extensive experience in client relationship management, deal sourcing/origination, transaction execution and account monitoring involving asset quality reviews, and monitoring compliance of financing documents.

Vijay holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow which focused on project finance, corporate finance, commercial banking, and investment management. He is also a certified expert in climate and renewable energy finance from Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and holds several other certifications in the climate and fintech space.
