Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use

Emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU) are challenging to abate, requiring large-scale changes to all land-use practices. These options are further constrained by the need to adapt to climate change and confront other environmental issues, such as water stress and preserving biodiversity.

Even accounting for land-use sinks, total emissions from this sector may still be positive in 2050. To meet a net zero pathway, relative reductions in this sector are more limited than in others, cutting almost in half from 2020 levels by 2040, and 75% by 2050. Land-use sinks and agriculture each contribute the same absolute volume of emissions cuts between 2020 and 2050.

While the investment required is low in absolute terms compared to other sectors (approximately USD 2 billion per year), behavior change like dietary switching and reducing food waste will also be needed to make an impact. A ban on the use of peat for horticultural use from 2024 will help reverse degradation of this portion of the UK’s carbon sinks.

There are significant data gaps around current investment in low-carbon farming practices, agriculture productivity improvements, and forestry management. These need to be closed to fully assess performance against benchmark investment needs.
