As part of its effort to fight Amazon deforestation since the early 2000s, Brazil allocated protected territories in high-risk zones to block advancing forest clearings. New work from Climate Policy Initiative\/Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (CPI\/PUC-Rio) shows that protected territories shielded forests under their domain, but they also appear to have deflected deforestation to unprotected regions<\/strong>. The findings highlight the local effectiveness of these territories, and thereby support their use in protecting high-value areas.
